May 27th, 2009
A Great Falls man is recovering at Benefis hospital after being stabbed in a nearby apartment building.
The stabbing took place Sunday around 4:15 p.m. in an apartment at 706 Third Avenue North. When the victim was stabbed, his lung was punctured, requiring immediate surgery.
Police are waiting to interview him until he’s in more stable condition. They’re also interviewing a female witness who was in the apartment building at the time of the incident.
Police are saying that alcohol was involved, however they aren’t focusing on a specific suspect or motive at this point.
GFPD Launching Investigation Over 911 Calls
May 27th, 2009
The Great Falls Police Department is conducting an internal investigation into its handling of two requests for help in the hours before a May 6 death, City Manager Greg Doyon said Tuesday.
“They are reviewing that and looking at it,” Doyon said. “Once (Police Chief Corky Grove) prepares that report, he’ll present it and there will be … a public response.”
Questions arose after the death of 30-year-old Jerod Williams in the early morning hours of May 6, and the subsequent arrest of 29-year-old Jaydee Haagenson on a charge of murder.
Haagenson’s father and aunt each called police asking officers to check on Haagenson hours before police say he strangled Williams.
Both relatives reported Haagenson was drinking in violation of his parole terms, and becoming agitated. A dispatcher denied the aunt’s request for officer assistance and a supervising officer denied the father’s request.
Police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Newton initially said there was no internal investigation, then said last week that police would not comment further on the response to the calls.
Stolen Belt leads to Robbery Charges
May 27th, 2009
A 17-year-old girl is in custody and faces possible robbery charges after allegedly injuring two people in the parking lot of Wal-Mart after attempting to steal from the store on Sunday.
According to Great Falls Police, the 17-year-old girl was apprehended after she allegedly tried to steal a belt from the store.
Security officials had tried to detain her in the store, but she was able to get to her car.
According to Sgt. Dean Bennett, she got in her car and was attempting to leave the parking lot when she hit a shopping cart, which then hit other vehicles.
She then attempted to flee the parking lot and hit two people, sending one to the hospital.
Bennett said he’s not sure of the severity of injuries.
The teenage girl, whose name has not been released, was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.
Robbery is a felony. Theft of an item under $1,000 is considered a misdemeanor. Bennett said according to Montana law, a theft is upgraded to a felony when there is “bodily harm” caused in the process.
Former Chariman Admits to Stealing
May 22nd, 2009

The former chairman of the annual East/West Shrine Bowl football game admitted in court Thursday that he stole about $40,000 from the charity event.
Jerrold “Jerry” Evans, 78, pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft, and prosecutors agreed to drop two other counts of felony theft.
If Judge Dirk Sandefur accepts the nonbinding plea agreement, Evans will be sentenced to six years under the supervision of the Department of Corrections — which could mean anything from probation to prison — but the entire sentence would be suspended if Evans repays the stolen money.
The organization commissioned an audit, which turned up unauthorized charges in Evans’ name. The Shriners hired a private investigator, who confronted Evans with the results of the audit.
Evans told the private investigator that a problem with alcohol and gambling led him to steal money donations from ticket sales for the game, according to the charges.

Just thought I would let you know the scanner is approaching its one month anniversary. It has been up since March 14th with no major issues or concerns.
A big thank you to all that listen in frequently and give me a reason to keep it running.
Hope to serve Great Falls with this service as long as I can. Be sure to keep this site in mind in the future.

Tier III Sex Offender Accused of Rape
May 6th, 2009
A convicted Tier III sex offender faces new accusations of raping an underage girl.
Alan Finigan, 36, made his initial appearance in Cascade County District Court on Tuesday, where he was charged with sexual intercourse without consent.
According to the charges, a 15-year-old girl told police she willingly had sex with Finigan. State law requires a person to be at least 16 years old to give legal consent to sexual activity.
The girl told police Finigan knew she was 15, according to the allegations in the charging documents.
When questioned about the allegations, the girl asked police, “What is consensual?” the charges state.
Tier III sex offenders are considered the highest risk to reoffend. Finigan was sentenced in 1994 for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, according to the Montana Sexual or Violent Offender Registry.
If convicted on the rape charge, Finigan faces four to 100 years in prison.
Possible Homicide Being Investigated
May 6th, 2009

Great Falls Police have arrested one man in connection with an apparent homicide early this morning.
Jay Haagenson, 29, is charged with murder. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Cascade County District Court at 1:30 this afternoon.
An alleged victim has been identified as a male acquaintance of Haagenson, but the Tribue is not publishing his name until family members have been notified.
It happened at 1241 6th Ave. NW — Haagenson’s home — early this morning.
According to arrest records filed in court today, police were called to that house at 1:27 a.m. for a report of a man not breathing.
The report says there were several people in the small house, and some of those witnesses told police Haagenson put the alleged victim in a choke hold in a small bedroom.
Two women said they tried to pull Haagenson off the other man, but by the time Haagenson let go, the other man blue, unresponsive and not breathing, according to the arrest record.
Haagenson was uncooperative and had to be restrained at the jail as officers took a blood sample and fingernail scrapings, the reports says.
During that process, police claim Haagenson said, “It wasn’t supposed to happen like that” and “He was my best friend and it was an accident,” the arrest record says.
